Regan Lee Defends and Joins
Two Others! |

|
4/13/03 Mid-Pacific Country Club-
REGAN LEE (above), shot a final round 5-over
par 77 to successfully defend (287, 1-under par) and joins
Ted Makalena ('57 & '58) and Lance Suzuki
('77 & '78, '83 & '84, '92 & '93) as the only players to
win back to back open titles! 808Golf asked Lee after the
round to answer with several words the following two
questions. "The 2003 Tournament?" Lee replied, "I'm glad
it's over" and "The wind?" Lee replied, "4 club wind!" We
forgot to ask Regan one more question about the greens,
not to worry I can sum that up for you all, glassy! In a
nut shell, the course was playing extremely difficult as
the scores reflect it from the top to the bottom. All
elements came into play in this years open. Rain, high
ruff, lighting fast greens, strong winds (35-40 MPH or
higher), and Iron Golfer pin placements! Lee struggled
with the flat stick down the stretch but managed to win by
one over a charging 34-year-old Mark Takahama who
finished with a solid 3-under par 69 and a tournament
total 288, even-par. Rounding out the top three, Phil
Chun "P" closed with a 1-over par 73 and a tournament
total 289, 1-over par. In the Senior Professional division
it was Larry Stubblefield with the win over
Tommy Ukauka in a playoff. The top amateur honors went
to Parker McLachlin who shot 72-72-77-74--295,
7-over par.
