This picturesque and challenging golf
course looks to the future with a high priority for the preservation
of native Hawaiian flora and fauna. The ohi’a and koa were planted
in a location from the state forest South of the 12th green
to the boundary at Hualalai Ranch, North of the 10th tee.
This provides a natural flyway for birds to travel.
The Io, hawk; Pueo, owl; and Iiwi are among the many native
birds. The canary finch;
meadow lark; peacock; turkey; and Chinese ring neck pheasant are a few
of the introduced species, which have made their homes at Makalei.
Ranging in elevation from 2,100 ft. (at the clubhouse), to
2,800 ft. (at the 10th tee) Makalei Golf Club
offers breath taking views of the Kona coast, native Hawaiian Forrest,
and views of neighboring Islands; Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe.
